Requirements:

  • Submit work experience
    • 73-23A (To be completed by employer)
    • 73-23B (Employment Information by Applicant. Employer/supervisor no longer available)

Below are the steps to obtain a Career and Technical Educator (CTE) License:

Step 1:
If you have an ELIS account and cannot log in, please contact the ELIS technology department at 217-558-3600 and select option 2.

Step 2:

Step 3:
Complete the 73-23 form. Check the box at the top of the form that states, "Career and Technical Educator (CTE)".
Part 1 of the form is for you to fill out. In part 1 where you are prompted to “list specific career and technical educator program title(s),” please click here and use this document to select up to 3 career programs. Select programs that best align with your education/work history.

You may select up to three career and technical educator program titles. Please note, a 73-23A form or 73-23B form is required for each program title you select. Although at this time you may select up to three, you can always add more after you obtain the CTE license.

Skip Part 2 of the form.
Again, send the completed form to [email protected].

Step 4:
Complete the work experience 73-23A form (or 73-23B form if the previous employer cannot be reached). The top half of the form is for you to complete, and the bottom half is for your previous employer to complete. The employer should send the completed form to [email protected]. The top of the form provides an ISBE email which is acceptable to use, but it usually takes the state a few weeks to process the form.

Please note: you must have a  73-23A or 73-23B form for each program titles/CIP code that you listed on the 73-23 form.

Step 5:
Apply for the Career and Technical Educator (CTE) License. The state will review your application and documents, this may take a few weeks.

Step 6:
You can check the status of your application on your ELIS account. The Illinois State Board of Education will send you an email after they have reviewed your application.

Step 7:
After your license has been issued, you must register it in the region you would like to teach in. Click here for a guide on how to register your license. Kane County is region 31. Click here for additional information on licensure registration.
